10% of the population worldwide is affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) and that’s why KIWAME was born: a tailor-made monitoring kit to assess the body water volume, the nutrition and the daily activity. KIWAME actually stands for KIdney WAter MEasurement.
For whom has KIWAME been developed?
Since the beginning of 2020, KIWAME has been supported by EIT Digital. Our solution addresses chronic kidney diseases patients at high risk of overhydration, providing a personalized coaching application with the ultimate goal of improving their quality of life..
Besides that, the significant lack of information and the communication barrier between health professionals and patients make it difficult to evaluate the impact of the patients’ daily habits. Here we see technology as a bridge - regardless of time and space.
How does KIWAME work?
To daily monitor the Water Body Composition and the salt intake (include the water and salt hidden in meals), the KIWAME ecosystem will permit healthcare assistant providers and healthcare institutions to use a set of services that leverage data from multiple sources (e.g. wearables, swivels and food pictures).
Detecting food composition from patient-taken photographs and building a robust Decision Support System built on on patient’s active feedback and passive data collection in the mobile phone are some of the challenges addressed.
By analysing the patient’s condition, its added value is twofold: On the one hand, the institutions’ resources are optimised and on the other hand, the users are empowered to better manage their health status and treatment adherence.
